¶¹There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

The same came² to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi³, we know⁴ that thou art a teacher come from God: for⁵ no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily⁶, verily, I say unto thee, Except⁷ a man be born again⁸, he cannot⁹ see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How¹⁰ can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born¹¹ of water and of¹² the Spirit, he cannot¹³ enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh¹⁴ is flesh; and that¹⁵ which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Marvel¹⁶ not that I said unto thee, Ye¹⁷ must be born again¹⁸.

The wind¹⁹ bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so²⁰ is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How²¹ can these things be?

¶ Jesus answered and said unto him, Art²² thou a master of Israel, and knowest²³ not these things?

Verily²⁴, verily, I say unto thee, We speak²⁵ that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye²⁶ receive not our witness.

If I have told you earthly²⁷ things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly²⁸ things?

And no man²⁹ hath ascended up to heaven, but³⁰ he that came down from heaven, even³¹ the Son of man which is in heaven.

And as³² Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even³³ so must the Son of man be lifted up:

That whosoever³⁴ believeth in him should not³⁵ perish, but have eternal³⁶ life.

For God³⁷ so loved the world, that he gave³⁸ his only begotten Son, that whosoever³⁹ believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God⁴⁰ sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but⁴¹ that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not⁴² condemned: but he that believeth not⁴³ is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And this⁴⁴ is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because⁴⁵ their deeds were evil.

¶ For every⁴⁶ one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved⁴⁷.

But he that⁴⁸ doeth truth cometh to the light, that his⁴⁹ deeds may be made manifest, that they are⁵⁰ wrought in God.

¶ After these⁵¹ things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized⁵².

And John also was baptizing in Aenon near⁵³ to Salim, because there was much⁵⁶ water there: and they⁵⁷ came, and were baptized.

⁵⁸For John was not yet cast into prison.

Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about⁵⁹ purifying.

And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that⁶⁰ was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom⁶¹ thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all⁶² men come to him.

John answered and said, A man⁶³ can receive⁶⁴ nothing, except it be given him from⁶⁵ heaven.

Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said⁶⁶, I am not the Christ, but⁶⁷ that I am sent before him.

He that hath⁶⁸ the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend⁶⁹ of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this⁷⁰ my joy therefore is fulfilled.

¶ He must increase⁷¹, but⁷² I must decrease.

He that cometh⁷³ from above is above⁷⁴ all: he that is⁷⁵ of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh⁷⁶ from heaven is above all.

And what⁷⁷ he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no⁷⁸ man receiveth his testimony.

He that hath received his testimony hath set⁷⁹ to his seal that God is true.

For he⁸⁰ whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God⁸¹ giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

The Father⁸² loveth the Son, and⁸³ hath given all things into his hand.

He that believeth on⁸⁴ the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see⁸⁵ life; but⁸⁶ the wrath of God abideth on him.
