¶ Then Jesus six¹ days before the passover came to Bethany², where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

There they made³ him a supper; and Martha⁴ served: but Lazarus⁵ was one of them that sat at the table with him.

Then took⁶ Mary a pound of ointment⁷ of spikenard⁸, very costly, and anointed⁹ the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled¹⁰ with the odour of the ointment.

Then saith one¹¹ of his disciples, Judas Iscariot¹², Simon's son, which should betray him,

Why was¹³ not this ointment sold for three hundred¹⁴ pence, and given¹⁵ to the poor?

This he said, not that¹⁶ he cared for the poor; but because he¹⁷ was a thief, and had the bag, and¹⁸ bare what was put therein.

Then said Jesus, Let¹⁹ her alone: against²⁰ the day of my burying hath she kept this.

For the poor²¹ always ye have with you; but²² me ye have not always.

²³Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

¶²⁴But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

²⁵Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

¶ On the next day much²⁶ people that were come²⁷ to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

Took branches²⁸ of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna²⁹: Blessed is the King³⁰ of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

And Jesus³¹, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as³² it is written,

Fear³³ not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting³⁴ on an ass's colt.

These things understood not³⁵ his disciples at the first: but when Jesus³⁶ was glorified, then remembered³⁷ they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

The people³⁸ therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare³⁹ record.

⁴⁰For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive⁴¹ ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world⁴² is gone after him.

¶ And there were certain Greeks⁴³ among them that came up to worship⁴⁴ at the feast:

The same came therefore to Philip⁴⁵, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would⁴⁶ see Jesus.

Philip cometh and telleth Andrew⁴⁷: and again Andrew and⁴⁸ Philip tell Jesus.

And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour⁴⁹ is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except⁵⁰ a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if⁵¹ it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

He that loveth⁵² his life shall lose it; and he that hateth⁵³ his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

If any man serve⁵⁴ me, let⁵⁵ him follow me; and where⁵⁶ I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him⁵⁷ will my Father honour.

¶ Now is⁵⁸ my soul troubled; and what⁵⁹ shall I say? Father⁶⁰, save me from this hour: but⁶¹ for this cause came I unto this hour.

Father⁶², glorify thy name. Then⁶³ came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have⁶⁴ both glorified it, and will⁶⁵ glorify it again.

The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered⁶⁶: others said, An angel⁶⁷ spake to him.

¶ Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but⁶⁸ for your sakes.

Now is⁶⁹ the judgment of this world: now⁷⁰ shall the prince of this world be cast out.

And I, if⁷¹ I be lifted up from the earth, will⁷² draw all men⁷³ unto me.

This he said, signifying what⁷⁴ death he should die.

The people answered him, We have heard out of the law⁷⁵ that Christ⁷⁶ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who⁷⁷ is this Son of man?

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet⁷⁸ a little while is the light with you. Walk⁷⁹ while ye have the light, lest⁸⁰ darkness come upon you: for⁸¹ he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

While ye have light, believe⁸² in the light, that ye may be the children⁸³ of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed⁸⁴, and did hide himself from them.

¶⁸⁵But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

That⁸⁶ the saying of Esaias⁸⁷ the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who⁸⁹ hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm⁹⁰ of the Lord been revealed⁹¹?

Therefore they⁹² could not believe, because⁹³ that Esaias said again,

¶ He hath⁹⁴ blinded their eyes, and hardened⁹⁵ their heart; that they⁹⁶ should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be⁹⁷ converted, and I should heal⁹⁸ them.

These things said Esaias, when⁹⁹ he saw¹⁰⁰ his glory, and spake¹⁰¹ of him.

¶ Nevertheless among¹⁰² the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not¹⁰³ confess him, lest¹⁰⁴ they should be put out of the synagogue:

For they¹⁰⁵ loved the praise of men more than the praise of God¹⁰⁶.

¶ Jesus cried and¹⁰⁷ said, He that¹⁰⁸ believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

¹⁰⁹And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

I am¹¹⁰ come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide¹¹¹ in darkness.

And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge¹¹² him not: for¹¹³ I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

He that rejecteth¹¹⁴ me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word¹¹⁵ that I have spoken, the same shall judge¹¹⁶ him in the last day.

¹¹⁷For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

¶ And I know that his¹¹⁸ commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
