¶ I say then, Hath God¹ cast away his people? God forbid². For I also³ am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew⁴. Wot⁵ ye not what the scripture saith of Elias⁶? how he maketh⁸ intercession to God against Israel, saying,

Lord⁹, they have killed thy prophets, and digged¹⁰ down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved¹¹ to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal¹².

Even so then at this present¹³ time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace¹⁵.

And if¹⁶ by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work¹⁷ is no more work.

What then¹⁸? Israel¹⁹ hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election²⁰ hath obtained it, and the rest²¹ were blinded²²

(According as it is written, God²³ hath given them the spirit of slumber²⁴, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day²⁵.

And David saith²⁶, Let their table²⁷ be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence²⁸ unto them:

¶ Let their eyes²⁹ be darkened, that they may not see, and bow³⁰ down their back alway.

I say then, Have they stumbled³¹ that they should fall? God forbid: but rather³² through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for³³ to provoke them to jealousy³⁴.

Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world³⁵, and the diminishing³⁶ of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle³⁷ of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office³⁸:

If by³⁹ any means I may provoke⁴⁰ to emulation them which are my⁴¹ flesh, and might⁴² save some of them.

For if the casting⁴³ away of them be the reconciling⁴⁴ of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but⁴⁵ life from the dead?

For if the firstfruit⁴⁶ be holy, the lump is also holy: and if⁴⁷ the root be holy, so are the branches.

And if some⁴⁸ of the branches be broken off, and thou, being⁴⁹ a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them⁵⁰, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

Boast not⁵¹ against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest⁵² not the root, but the root thee.

Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that⁵³ I might be graffed in.

¶ Well⁵⁴; because⁵⁵ of unbelief they were broken off, and⁵⁶ thou standest by faith. Be⁵⁷ not highminded, but⁵⁸ fear:

For if God⁵⁹ spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

Behold therefore⁶⁰ the goodness and severity⁶¹ of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou⁶² continue in his goodness: otherwise⁶³ thou also shalt be cut off.

⁶⁴And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.

⁶⁵For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

For I would⁶⁶ not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this⁶⁷ mystery, lest⁶⁸ ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness⁶⁹ in part is happened to Israel, until⁷⁰ the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

And so all⁷¹ Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There⁷² shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall⁷³ turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

For this⁷⁴ is my covenant unto them, when⁷⁵ I shall take away their sins.

As concerning the gospel, they are enemies⁷⁶ for your sakes: but⁷⁷ as touching the election, they are beloved⁷⁸ for the fathers' sakes.

⁷⁹For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

¶ For as ye⁸⁰ in times past have not believed⁸¹ God, yet have now obtained mercy through⁸² their unbelief:

Even so have these also now not believed⁸³, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

For God⁸⁴ hath concluded them all⁸⁵ in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

¶ O the depth⁸⁶ of the riches⁸⁷ both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how⁸⁸ unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

⁸⁹For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

⁹⁰Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

For of him⁹¹, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom⁹² be glory for ever. Amen.
