M'r 4:1 | The parable of the sower, |
M'r 4:1 | ¶ And he began1 again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that2 he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. |
M'r 4:2 TEACHER, DIVINE | And he taught them many things by parables3, and said unto them in his4 doctrine, |
M'r 4:3 | Hearken5; Behold, there6 went out a sower to sow: |
M'r 4:4 | 7And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. |
M'r 4:5 EMOTIONAL HEARERS | 8And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: |
M'r 4:6 | But when the sun9 was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root10, it withered away. |
M'r 4:7 | 11And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. |
M'r 4:8 | And other fell12 on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred13. |
M'r 4:9 | 14And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
M'r 4:10 RECEPTION-REJECTION OF GOD AND TRUTH | ¶15And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. |
M'r 4:11 | And he said unto them, Unto you16 it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them17 that are without, all these18 things are done in parables: |
M'r 4:12 BLINDNESS-VISION | That seeing19 they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted20, and their sins should be forgiven them. |
M'r 4:13 | And he said unto them, Know21 ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? |
M'r 4:14 | and the meaning thereof. |
M'r 4:14 BIBLE, THE; THE WORD OF GOD | The sower22 soweth the word23. |
M'r 4:15 BIBLE, THE; THE WORD OF GOD | And these24 are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan25 cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. |
M'r 4:16 | And these are they likewise which26 are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; |
M'r 4:17 | And have27 no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when28 affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. |
M'r 4:18 | 29And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, |
M'r 4:19 DESIRE, EVIL POVERTY-RICHES | And the cares30 of this world, and the deceitfulness31 of riches, and the lusts32 of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful33. |
M'r 4:20 RESULTS DEMANDED | ¶ And these are they which34 are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred35. |
M'r 4:21 | We must communicate the light of our knowledge to others. |
M'r 4:21 | ¶ And he said unto them, Is a36 candle brought to be put under a bushel37, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? |
M'r 4:22 | 38For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. |
M'r 4:23 | 39If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. |
M'r 4:24 INVITATIONS-WARNINGS | And he said unto them, Take40 heed what ye hear: with41 what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear42 shall more be given. |
M'r 4:25 | 43For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath. |
M'r 4:26 | The parable of the seed growing secretly; |
M'r 4:26 KINGDOM SIMILITUDES | And he said, So44 is the kingdom of God, as45 if a man should cast seed into the ground; |
M'r 4:27 NATURE'S MYSTERIES | And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow46 up, he knoweth not how. |
M'r 4:28 AGRICULTURE-HORTICULTURE NATURE'S LESSON | For the earth47 bringeth forth fruit of herself; first48 the blade49, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. |
M'r 4:29 AGRICULTURE-HORTICULTURE SOWING AND REAPING | But when the fruit is brought forth50, immediately he putteth51 in the sickle, because the harvest is come. |
M'r 4:30 | and of the mustard seed. |
M'r 4:30 | ¶52And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? |
M'r 4:31 MISSIONS, WORLD-WIDE MUSTARD SEED | It is like53 a grain of mustard seed54, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than55 all the seeds that be in the earth: |
M'r 4:32 MISSIONS, WORLD-WIDE | But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh56 greater than all herbs, and shooteth57 out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge58 under the shadow of it. |
M'r 4:33 | And with59 many such parables spake he the word unto them, as60 they were able to hear it. |
M'r 4:34 TEACHER, DIVINE | But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when61 they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples. |
M'r 4:35 | Christ stilleth the tempest on the sea. |
M'r 4:35 | ¶ And the same62 day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let63 us pass over unto the other side. |
M'r 4:36 | And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even64 as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. |
M'r 4:37 METEOROLOGY | And there arose65 a great storm66 of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. |
M'r 4:38 PILLOWS, OR BOLSTERS REST-UNREST SLEEP-WAKEFULNESS WEAKNESS-POWER | And he was in the67 hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they68 awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest69 thou not that we perish? |
M'r 4:39 CHRIST'S COMPOSURE MIRACLES WEAKNESS-POWER WEAKNESS-POWER | And he arose70, and rebuked71 the wind72, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. |
M'r 4:40 FAITH-UNBELIEF | ¶ And he said unto them, Why73 are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith74? |
M'r 4:41 ASTONISHMENT | And they feared75 exceedingly, and said one to another, What76 manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? |
