Sheep Gate

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market2 a pool3, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda4, having five porches.

Joh 5:3

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind5, halt, withered6, waiting7 for the moving of the water.

Joh 5:4

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever8 then first9 after the troubling of the water stepped in was made10 whole of whatsoever disease he had.

WEAKNESS-POWER

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have14 no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before15 me.

Joh 5:8

16Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

Joh 5:9
HEALTH-DISEASE
SABBATH

And immediately17 the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on18 the same day was the sabbath.

The Jews therefore cavil, and persecute him for it.
Joh 5:10
RELIGION, TRUE-FALSE

The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not19 lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

Joh 5:11

20He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

Joh 5:12

Then asked they him, What21 man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

Joh 5:13

And he that22 was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had23 conveyed himself away, a multitude being24 in that place.

Joh 5:14
SEEKING SAVIOUR, THE
SIN-SAVIOUR

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the25 temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin26 no more, lest27 a worse thing come unto thee.

Joh 5:15

The man departed, and told28 the Jews that it was Jesus, which29 had made him whole.

Joh 5:16
PLOTTING
SUFFERING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS SAKE

And therefore did the Jews persecute30 Jesus, and sought31 to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

Joh 5:17
He answers for himself, and reproves them, shewing by the testimony of his Father,
Joh 5:17

But Jesus answered them, My32 Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

Therefore the Jews33 sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken34 the sabbath, but said also that God was35 his Father, making himself equal with God.

Joh 5:19
VERILY, VERILY

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily36, verily, I say unto you, The Son37 can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for38 what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Joh 5:20

For the Father43 loveth the Son, and sheweth44 him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater45 works than these, that ye may marvel.

Joh 5:21
AWAKENINGS AND RELIGIOUS REFORMS

For as46 the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even47 so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

Joh 5:22
FUTURE, THE

48For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

Joh 5:23

That all men49 should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that50 honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
