¶ Behold, what¹ manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that² we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world³ knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

Beloved, now are we the⁴ sons of God, and it⁵ doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when⁶ he shall appear, we shall be like him; for⁸ we shall see him as he is.

And every⁹ man that hath this hope in him purifieth¹⁰ himself, even¹¹ as he is pure.

¶ Whosoever committeth¹² sin transgresseth¹³ also the law: for¹⁴ sin is the transgression of the law.

And ye know that he¹⁵ was manifested to¹⁶ take away our sins; and in¹⁷ him is no sin.

Whosoever abideth¹⁸ in him sinneth not: whosoever¹⁹ sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

Little children, let²⁰ no man deceive you: he that²¹ doeth righteousness is righteous, even²² as he is righteous.

He that²³ committeth sin is of the devil; for²⁴ the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose²⁵ the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Whosoever is born²⁶ of God doth not commit sin; for²⁷ his seed remaineth in him: and he²⁸ cannot sin, because he is born of God.

¶ In this the children of God²⁹ are manifest, and³⁰ the children of the devil: whosoever³¹ doeth not righteousness is³² not of God, neither³³ he that loveth not his brother.

¶ For this³⁴ is the message³⁵ that ye heard from the beginning, that we³⁶ should love one another.

Not as³⁷ Cain, who was of³⁸ that wicked one, and³⁹ slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his⁴⁰ brother's righteous.

Marvel not⁴¹, my brethren, if⁴² the world hate you.

¶ We know⁴³ that we have⁴⁴ passed from death unto life, because⁴⁵ we love the brethren. He that loveth⁴⁶ not his brother abideth in death.

Whosoever hateth⁴⁷ his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath⁴⁸ eternal life abiding in him.

Hereby perceive⁴⁹ we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we⁵⁰ ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

But whoso⁵¹ hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth⁵² up his bowels of compassion from him, how⁵³ dwelleth the love of God in him?

My⁵⁴ little children, let⁵⁵ us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

And hereby⁵⁶ we know that we are of the truth, and shall⁵⁷ assure⁵⁸ our hearts before him.

¶ For if⁵⁹ our heart condemn us, God⁶⁰ is greater than our heart, and⁶¹ knoweth all things.

⁶²Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

And whatsoever⁶³ we ask, we receive of him, because⁶⁴ we keep his commandments, and do⁶⁵ those things that are pleasing in his sight.

¶ And this is his commandment⁶⁶, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love⁶⁷ one another, as he gave us commandment.

And he that⁶⁸ keepeth his commandments dwelleth⁶⁹ in him, and he in him. And hereby we⁷⁰ know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
