¶ To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after² he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God³, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude⁴ of thy tender⁵ mercies blot⁶ out my transgressions.

Wash⁷ me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse⁸ me from my sin.

For I⁹ acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin¹⁰ is ever before me.

Against¹¹ thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil¹² in thy sight: that thou¹³ mightest be justified when¹⁴ thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

Behold, I was shapen¹⁵ in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive¹⁶ me.

Behold,¹⁷ thou desirest truth in the inward¹⁸ parts: and in the hidden¹⁹ part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

¶ Purge²⁰ me with hyssop, and²¹ I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter²² than snow.

Make²³ me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones²⁴ which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Hide²⁵ thy face from my sins, and blot²⁶ out all mine iniquities.

¶ Create²⁷ in me a clean²⁸ heart, O God; and renew²⁹ a right³⁰ spirit within me.

Cast³¹ me not away from thy presence; and take³² not thy holy³³ spirit from me.

Restore³⁴ unto me the joy³⁵ of thy salvation; and uphold³⁶ me with thy free³⁷ spirit.

Then³⁸ will I teach transgressors thy ways³⁹; and sinners shall be converted⁴⁰ unto thee.

¶ Deliver⁴¹ me from bloodguiltiness⁴², O God, thou God⁴³ of my salvation: and my tongue⁴⁴ shall sing aloud of thy righteousness⁴⁵.

O Lord⁴⁶, open⁴⁷ thou my lips; and my mouth⁴⁸ shall shew forth thy praise.

For thou desirest⁴⁹ not sacrifice; else would I⁵⁰ give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

The sacrifices⁵¹ of God are a broken spirit⁵²: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou⁵³ wilt not despise.

Do⁵⁴ good in thy⁵⁵ good pleasure unto Zion: build⁵⁶ thou the walls of Jerusalem.

Then shalt thou be pleased⁵⁷ with the sacrifices⁵⁸ of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
