¶ There was a man in the land of Uz¹, whose name was Job³; and that man was perfect⁴ and upright, and one⁵ that feared God, and eschewed evil.

And there were born unto him seven sons⁶ and three daughters.

His substance⁷ also was seven⁸ thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household⁹; so that this man was the greatest¹⁰ of all the men¹¹ of the east¹².

¶ And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called¹³ for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified¹⁴ them, and rose up¹⁵ early in the morning, and offered¹⁶ burnt offerings according¹⁷ to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be¹⁸ that my sons have sinned, and cursed¹⁹ God in their hearts²⁰. Thus²¹ did Job continually²².

¶ Now²³ there was a day when the sons²⁴ of God came to²⁵ present themselves before the LORD, and Satan²⁶ came also²⁷ among them²⁸.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence²⁹ comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going³⁰ to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered³¹ my servant³² Job, that there is none³³ like him in the earth, a perfect³⁴ and an upright³⁵ man, one³⁶ that feareth God, and escheweth³⁷ evil?

Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job³⁸ fear God for nought?

¶ Hast not thou made an hedge³⁹ about⁴⁰ him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed⁴¹ the work of his hands, and his substance⁴² is increased in the land.

But put⁴³ forth thine hand now, and touch⁴⁴ all that he hath, and he will curse thee⁴⁵ to thy face.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold,⁴⁶ all that he hath is in thy power⁴⁷; only⁴⁸ upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan⁴⁹ went forth from the presence of the LORD.

¶ And there was a day when⁵⁰ his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

And there came a messenger⁵¹ unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

And the Sabeans⁵² fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only⁵³ am escaped alone to tell thee.

While he was yet speaking, there came⁵⁴ also another, and said, The fire of God⁵⁵ is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans⁵⁶ made out three bands, and fell⁵⁷ upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

While he was yet speaking, there came⁵⁸ also another, and said, Thy sons⁵⁹ and thy daughters were eating⁶⁰ and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

And, behold, there came a great⁶¹ wind from⁶² the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead⁶³; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¶ Then Job arose, and rent⁶⁴ his mantle⁶⁵, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

And said, Naked came⁶⁶ I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave⁶⁷, and the LORD hath taken away⁶⁸; blessed⁶⁹ be the name of the LORD.

In all this⁷⁰ Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly⁷¹.
