Ps 44:1 | ¶ To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard2 with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times3 of old. |
Ps 44:2 | How thou didst drive out4 the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict5 the people, and cast them out. |
Ps 44:3 | For6 they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right7 hand, and thine arm, and the light8 of thy countenance, because9 thou hadst a favour unto them. |
Ps 44:4 | Thou art my King10, O God: command11 deliverances for Jacob. |
Ps 44:5 BATTLE OF LIFE | Through thee12 will we push13 down our enemies: through thy name will we tread14 them under that rise up against us. |
Ps 44:6 SECURITY-INSECURITY | 15For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. |
Ps 44:7 | complains of her present evils. |
Ps 44:7 | But16 thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them17 to shame that hated us. |
Ps 44:8 BOASTING IN GOD | In God18 we boast all the day long, and praise19 thy name for ever. Selah. |
Ps 44:9 | ¶20But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. |
Ps 44:10 ISRAEL-THE JEWS | ¶ Thou21 makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil22 for themselves. |
Ps 44:11 DISPERSION | Thou hast given23 us like sheep appointed for meat24; and hast scattered25 us among the heathen. |
Ps 44:12 | Thou sellest26 thy people for nought27, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price. |
Ps 44:13 | Thou makest28 us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn29 and a derision to them that are round about us. |
Ps 44:14 ISRAEL-THE JEWS | Thou makest us a byword30 among the heathen, a shaking31 of the head among the people. |
Ps 44:15 HONOUR-DISHONOUR | My confusion32 is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered33 me, |
Ps 44:16 | For the34 voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy35 and avenger. |
Ps 44:17 | Professing her integrity, |
Ps 44:17 | ¶ All this36 is come upon us; yet37 have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt38 falsely in thy covenant. |
Ps 44:18 | Our heart39 is not turned back, neither have40 our steps41 declined from thy way; |
Ps 44:19 SHADOW OF DEATH | Though42 thou hast sore broken us in the43 place of dragons, and covered us with the44 shadow of death. |
Ps 44:20 | ¶ If we45 have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched46 out our hands to a strange god; |
Ps 44:21 KNOWLEDGE-IGNORANCE | Shall47 not God search this out? for he knoweth48 the secrets of the heart. |
Ps 44:22 | Yea,49 for thy sake are we killed50 all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. |
Ps 44:23 AWAKENING, DIVINE | Awake51, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast52 us not off for ever. |
Ps 44:24 | she fervently prays for succour. |
Ps 44:24 FELLOWSHIP-ESTRANGEMENT | Wherefore53 hidest thou thy face, and forgettest54 our affliction and our oppression? |
Ps 44:25 | 55For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. |
Ps 44:26 | Arise for our help56, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake. |
