The best I could do in that situation is parse the preps myself in each 
'get/take' situation and pass if appropriate.  Ugly, and not at all 
easy for people to subsequently add on to, since they have to remember to 
pass in certain situations.

In retrospect I would not have made $thing a child of $container solely 
for this reason, until something like Quinn mentions came out.
