¶ Then was¹ Jesus led up of the Spirit² into the wilderness to³ be tempted of the devil.

And when he had fasted⁴ forty days and forty nights, he was⁵ afterward an hungred.

And when the tempter⁶ came to him, he said, If⁷ thou be the Son of God, command⁸ that these stones be made bread.

But he answered and said, It is⁹ written, Man¹⁰ shall not live by bread alone, but¹¹ by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil taketh¹³ him up into the holy¹⁴ city, and setteth him on¹⁵ a pinnacle of the temple,

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for¹⁶ it is written, He shall¹⁷ give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It¹⁹ is written again, Thou²⁰ shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Again, the devil²¹ taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth²² him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, All²³ these things will I give²⁴ thee, if²⁵ thou wilt fall down and worship me.

¶ Then saith Jesus unto him, Get²⁶ thee hence, Satan²⁷: for it is written, Thou shalt²⁸ worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Then the devil²⁹ leaveth him, and, behold³⁰, angels came and ministered unto him.

¶ Now when³¹ Jesus had heard that John was cast³² into prison, he departed into Galilee;

And leaving³³ Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum³⁴, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon³⁵ and Nephthalim:

That it³⁸ might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying³⁹,

The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee⁴⁰ of the Gentiles;

The people which sat in darkness⁴¹ saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow⁴² of death light is sprung up.

From that⁴³ time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent⁴⁴: for the kingdom⁴⁵ of heaven is at hand.

¶ And Jesus, walking⁴⁶ by the sea⁴⁷ of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for⁵¹ they were fishers.

And he saith unto them, Follow⁵² me, and I will⁵³ make you fishers of men.

¶⁵⁴And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

And going on from thence, he saw other⁵⁵ two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

⁵⁶And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

¶ And Jesus⁵⁷ went about all Galilee, teaching⁵⁸ in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel⁵⁹ of the kingdom, and healing⁶⁰ all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

And his fame⁶¹ went throughout all Syria⁶²: and they brought unto him all sick⁶³ people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed⁶⁴ with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that⁶⁶ had the palsy; and he healed them.

And there followed⁶⁷ him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis⁶⁸, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
