M't 26:1
Christ foretells his own death.
M't 26:1

And it came to pass, when1 Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

M't 26:2

Ye know2 that after two days is the feast3 of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed4 to be crucified.

M't 26:3
The rulers conspire against him.
M't 26:3
CAIAPHAS

Then assembled5 together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace6 of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas7,

M't 26:4
PLOTTING
SIMPLICITY-DUPLICITY

And consulted8 that they might take Jesus by9 subtilty, and kill him.

M't 26:5

But they said, Not10 on the feast day, lest11 there be an uproar among the people.

LIBERALITY-PARSIMONY-COVETOUSNESS
WORK AND WORKERS, RELIGIOUS

But when his disciples saw it, they16 had indignation, saying, To17 what purpose is this waste?

M't 26:9

18For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.

M't 26:10
WORK AND WORKERS, RELIGIOUS

When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why19 trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good20 work upon me.

M't 26:11
POVERTY-RICHES

For ye have21 the poor always with you; but22 me ye have not always.

M't 26:12
DEAD, THE

23For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

M't 26:13

Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever24 this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there25 shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

And from that time he30 sought opportunity to betray him.

M't 26:17
Christ eats the passover;
M't 26:17
FEASTS, JEWISH

Now the first31 day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where32 wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

M't 26:18
HOUR, CHRIST'S

And he said, Go33 into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master34 saith, My time35 is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

M't 26:19
OBEDIENCE-DISOBEDIENCE

And the disciples36 did as Jesus had appointed them; and they37 made ready the passover.

M't 26:20

Now when38 the even was come, he39 sat down with the twelve.

M't 26:21

And as they did eat, he said, Verily40 I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

M't 26:22

41And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

M't 26:23

And he answered and said, He that42 dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

M't 26:24
WOES

The Son of man goeth as43 it is written of44 him: but woe45 unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

M't 26:25

Then Judas46, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou47 hast said.

M't 26:26

And as48 they were eating, Jesus49 took bread, and blessed it,50 and brake51 it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take52, eat; this53 is my body.

M't 26:27

And he took54 the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink55 ye all of it;

For this is my56 blood of the new testament, which is shed57 for many for the remission of sins.

M't 26:29

Peter answered and said unto him, Though68 all men shall be offended because of thee, yet69 will I never be offended.

M't 26:34

Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That70 this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

M't 26:35

Peter said unto him, Though71 I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise72 also said all the disciples.

M't 26:36

And he went a little further, and fell80 on his face, and prayed81, saying, O my Father82, if83 it be possible, let84 this cup pass from me: nevertheless not85 as I will, but as thou wilt.

Watch88 and pray, that ye enter89 not into temptation: the spirit90 indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

M't 26:42
SURRENDERED LIFE, THE

He went away again the second91 time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

M't 26:43

And he came and found them asleep again: for92 their eyes were heavy.

M't 26:44

And he left them, and went away again, and prayed93 the third time, saying the same words.

M't 26:45
HOUR, CHRIST'S
OPPORTUNITY

Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on94 now, and take your rest: behold, the hour95 is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

M't 26:46

96Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

M't 26:47
and being betrayed by a kiss,
M't 26:47
RABBLE, THE

And while he yet spake, lo97, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

M't 26:48

Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever98 I shall kiss, that same is he: hold99 him fast.

M't 26:49

And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail100, master; and kissed him101.

M't 26:50
CHRIST'S COMPOSURE

And Jesus said unto him, Friend102, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

M't 26:51

103And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.

M't 26:52
MEEKNESS-RETALIATION

Then said Jesus unto him, Put104 up again thy sword into his place: for all they105 that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

M't 26:53
ANGELS
LEGION

Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall106 presently give me more than twelve legions107 of108 angels?

M't 26:54

109But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

M't 26:55

In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are110 ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat111 daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

PETER
PETER

But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went115 in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.

M't 26:59
COURTS

Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought116 false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

M't 26:60

But found none117: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At118 the last came two false witnesses,

M't 26:61

And said, This119 fellow said, I am120 able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

M't 26:65
JOY-SORROW

Then the high priest129 rent his clothes, saying, He130 hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

M't 26:66

What think ye? They answered and said, He131 is guilty of death.

And when142 he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This143 fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

M't 26:72

And again he denied with144 an oath, I do not145 know the man.

M't 26:73
