Ac 27:1 | Paul shipping towards Rome, |
Ac 27:1 PAUL Italy | ¶ And when1 it was determined that we should sail into Italy2, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion3 of Augustus4' band. |
Ac 27:2 ARISTARCHUS SHIPS THESSALONICA Asia Adramyttium Thessalonica | And entering into a ship of Adramyttium5, we6 launched, meaning to sail7 by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus8, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us9. |
Ac 27:3 COURTESY-DISCOURTESY Sidon | And the next day we touched at Sidon10. And Julius11 courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself. |
Ac 27:4 CYPRUS Cyprus | And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus12, because the winds13 were contrary. |
Ac 27:5 CILICIA PAMPHYLIA Myra Lycia Cilicia Pamphylia | And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia14 and Pamphylia15, we came to Myra16, a city of Lycia. |
Ac 27:6 ALEXANDRIA ITALY Alexandria Italy | And there the centurion17 found a ship of Alexandria18 sailing into Italy; and he put us therein. |
Ac 27:7 CRETE Crete Salmone Cnidus | And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus19, the wind not suffering us, we sailed20 under21 Crete, over against Salmone23; |
Ac 27:8 Fair Havens Lasea | And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens24; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. |
Ac 27:9 | Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast25 was now already past, Paul admonished them, |
Ac 27:10 | foretells of the danger of the voyage, |
Ac 27:10 METEOROLOGY | ¶ And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive26 that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives. |
Ac 27:11 | but is not believed. |
Ac 27:11 CENTURIONS | Nevertheless the centurion believed28 the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul. |
Ac 27:12 Crete Phoenix | ¶ And because the haven29 was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice30, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete31, and lieth toward the south west and north west. |
Ac 27:13 METEOROLOGY Crete | And when the south32 wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing33 thence, they sailed close by Crete. |
Ac 27:14 | They are tossed to and fro with tempest; |
Ac 27:14 METEOROLOGY | But not34 long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon36. |
Ac 27:15 | And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we37 let her drive. |
Ac 27:16 ISLANDS Cauda | And running under a certain island which is called Clauda38, we had much work to come by the boat: |
Ac 27:17 Syrtis | Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing39 lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven. |
Ac 27:18 METEOROLOGY | And we being40 exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next41 day they lightened the ship; |
Ac 27:19 | And the third day we42 cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship. |
Ac 27:20 DARK DAYS HOPE-DESPAIR WEAKNESS-POWER | ¶ And when neither43 sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no44 small tempest lay on us, all45 hope that we should be saved was then taken away. |
Ac 27:21 CRETE Crete | ¶ But after46 long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should47 have hearkened unto me, and not48 have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. |
Ac 27:22 DISCOURAGEMENT-ENCOURAGEMENT | And now I exhort49 you to be of good cheer: for50 there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship. |
Ac 27:23 ANGEL OF THE LORD ANGELS PAUL SERVANTS, GOD'S, SAINTS SO CALLED | For there51 stood by me this night the angel of God, whose52 I am, and53 whom I serve, |
Ac 27:24 RULER OF DESTINY | Saying, Fear not54, Paul; thou55 must be brought before Caesar: and, lo56, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. |
Ac 27:25 CHEERFULNESS-DESPONDENCY FAITH-UNBELIEF | Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe57 God, that it shall be even as it was told me. |
Ac 27:26 | Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain58 island. |
Ac 27:27 Adriatic Sea | But when the fourteenth59 night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria60, about midnight the shipmen61 deemed that they drew near to some country; |
Ac 27:28 | And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms. |
Ac 27:29 ANCHORS | Then fearing lest we should have fallen62 upon rocks, they cast four anchors63 out of the stern, and wished64 for the day. |
Ac 27:30 | ¶ And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat65 into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship66, |
Ac 27:31 | Paul said67 to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except68 these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. |
Ac 27:32 | 69Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off. |
Ac 27:33 SELF-INDULGENCE-SELF-DENIAL | And while70 the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This71 day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. |
Ac 27:34 | Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this72 is for your health: for there73 shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you. |
Ac 27:35 BREAD FOOD, PHYSICAL-SPIRITUAL | And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave74 thanks to God in75 presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. |
Ac 27:36 CHEERFULNESS-DESPONDENCY | Then were they all76 of good cheer, and they also took some meat. |
Ac 27:37 | And we were in all in the ship two77 hundred threescore and sixteen souls78. |
Ac 27:38 WHEAT | And when they had eaten enough, they lightened79 the ship, and cast out the wheat80 into the sea. |
Ac 27:39 | And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship. |
Ac 27:40 | ¶ And when they had taken up81 the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands82, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore. |
Ac 27:41 | and suffer shipwreck; |
Ac 27:41 SHIPS | And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran83 the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken84 with the violence of the waves. |
Ac 27:42 KINDNESS-CRUELTY | 85And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape. |
Ac 27:43 | But the centurion, willing86 to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land: |
Ac 27:44 | yet all come safe to land. |
Ac 27:44 DELIVERANCE | And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that87 they escaped all safe to land88. |
