Ge 39:1 | Joseph is bought by Potiphar, and preferred in the family. |
Ge 39:1 EGYPT JOSEPH TRAFFIC IN MEN Egypt | ¶ And Joseph1 was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites2, which had brought him down thither. |
Ge 39:2 JOSEPH | And the LORD3 was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house4 of his master the Egyptian. |
Ge 39:3 PROSPERITY-ADVERSITY | And his master saw that5 the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper6 in his hand. |
Ge 39:4 BUSINESS LIFE | And Joseph7 found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer8 over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. |
Ge 39:5 EXALTATION-ABASEMENT | And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's9 sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. |
Ge 39:6 BUSINESS LIFE | And he left10 all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save11 the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person,12 and well favoured. |
Ge 39:7 | He resists his mistress's temptation. |
Ge 39:7 JOSEPH | ¶ And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast13 her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie14 with me. |
Ge 39:8 | But he refused15, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master16 wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; |
Ge 39:9 | There is none17 greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then18 can I do this great wickedness, and sin19 against God? |
Ge 39:10 | ¶ And it came to pass, as she spake20 to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be21 with her. |
Ge 39:11 | And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men22 of the house there within. |
Ge 39:12 | And she caught23 him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left24 his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. |
Ge 39:13 | He is falsely accused by her. |
Ge 39:13 | ¶ And it came to pass,25 when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand26, and was fled forth, |
Ge 39:14 | That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath27 brought in an Hebrew28 unto us to mock us; he came29 in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud30 voice: |
Ge 39:15 | And it came to pass,31 when he heard that I lifted32 up my voice and cried, that he left his garment33 with me, and fled, and got him out. |
Ge 39:16 | 34And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home. |
Ge 39:17 | 35And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: |
Ge 39:18 | And it came to pass,36 as I lifted37 up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out. |
Ge 39:19 | ¶ And it came to pass, when his master heard38 the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath39 was kindled. |
Ge 39:20 | He is cast into prison. |
Ge 39:20 BUSINESS LIFE HOME JOSEPH JUSTICE-INJUSTICE SUFFERING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS SAKE | ¶ And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison40, a place where the king's41 prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. |
Ge 39:21 | God is with him there, and he is advanced by the keeper of prison. |
Ge 39:21 FAVOUR-DISFAVOUR | But the LORD42 was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy43, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. |
Ge 39:22 KEEPERS | And the keeper of the prison committed44 to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. |
Ge 39:23 | The keeper45 of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because46 the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper. |
