Ge 32:1 ANGELS | ¶ And Jacob went on his way, and the angels1 of God met him. |
Ge 32:2 MAHANAIM Mahanaim | And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's2 host: and he called the name3 of that place Mahanaim4. |
Ge 32:3 | His message to Esau. |
Ge 32:3 Edom Seir | ¶ And Jacob sent5 messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land6 of Seir7, the country8 of Edom. |
Ge 32:4 | And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord9 Esau; Thy servant10 Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now: |
Ge 32:5 POVERTY-RICHES | And I have oxen11, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find12 grace in thy sight. |
Ge 32:6 | He is afraid of Esau's coming. |
Ge 32:6 | And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four13 hundred men with him. |
Ge 32:7 | Then Jacob was greatly14 afraid and distressed15: and he16 divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands; |
Ge 32:8 | 17And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape. |
Ge 32:9 | He prays for deliverance. |
Ge 32:9 JACOB JACOB PRAYER | ¶ And Jacob18 said, O God19 of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD20 which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee: |
Ge 32:10 HUMILITY-PRIDE JORDAN STAFF Jordan | ¶ I am not worthy of the least of all21 the mercies22, and of all the truth23, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff24 I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands25. |
Ge 32:11 | Deliver26 me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother27 with28 the children. |
Ge 32:12 | And thou29 saidst, I will30 surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. |
Ge 32:13 | He sends a present to Esau, and passes the brook Jabbok. |
Ge 32:13 | ¶ And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which31 came to his hand32 a present33 for Esau his brother; |
Ge 32:14 | Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, |
Ge 32:15 ANIMALS | Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals. |
Ge 32:16 | And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space34 betwixt drove and drove. |
Ge 32:17 | And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art35 thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee? |
Ge 32:18 | Then thou shalt say36, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us. |
Ge 32:19 | And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him. |
Ge 32:20 | ¶ And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease37 him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure38 he will accept of me39. |
Ge 32:21 | So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company. |
Ge 32:22 Jabbok | And he rose up that night, and took his two wives40, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok41. |
Ge 32:23 | And he took them, and sent them42 over the brook, and sent over that he had. |
Ge 32:24 | He wrestles with an angel at Peniel, where he is called Israel. |
Ge 32:24 ASSOCIATION-SEPARATION DEVOTIONAL LIFE JACOB PRAYER PRAYER | ¶ And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled43 a man44 with him until the breaking of the day45. |
Ge 32:25 | And when he saw that he46 prevailed not against him, he touched47 the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. |
Ge 32:26 EARNESTNESS-INDIFFERENCE PRAYER | And he said, Let me go48, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not49 let thee go, except thou bless50 me. |
Ge 32:27 | And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. |
Ge 32:28 ISRAEL-THE JEWS NAMES CHANGED | And he said, Thy name51 shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel52: for as a prince hast thou power53 with God and with men54, and hast prevailed. |
Ge 32:29 BLESSINGS-AFFLICTIONS | And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore55 is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed56 him there. |
Ge 32:30 JACOB SEEING GOD Peniel | ¶ And Jacob57 called the name of the place Peniel58: for I have59 seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. |
Ge 32:31 | He halts. |
Ge 32:31 Penuel | And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon60 him, and he halted61 upon his thigh. |
Ge 32:32 SINEWS | Therefore the children of Israel eat not62 of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank. |
