Ge 19:1 ANGELS LOT LOT Sodom | ¶1And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose2 up to meet them; and he bowed3 himself with his face toward the ground; |
Ge 19:2 SOCIAL LIFE SOCIAL LIFE | And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn4 in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash5 your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay;6 but we will abide in the street all night. |
Ge 19:3 BREAD | And he pressed7 upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast8, and did bake unleavened9 bread, and they did eat. |
Ge 19:4 | The vicious Sodomites are smitten with blindness. |
Ge 19:4 Sodom | ¶ But10 before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all11 the people from every quarter: |
Ge 19:5 | 12And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. |
Ge 19:6 | And Lot13 went out at the door14 unto them, and shut the door after him, |
Ge 19:7 | 15And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. |
Ge 19:8 | Behold now, I have16 two daughters which have not known man; let17 me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore18 came they under the shadow of my roof. |
Ge 19:9 FELLOW | And they said, Stand19 back. And they said again, This20 one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed21 sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. |
Ge 19:10 | ¶ But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. |
Ge 19:11 HEALTH-DISEASE | And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness22, both small and great: so that they23 wearied themselves to find the door. |
Ge 19:12 | Lot is warned, and in vain warns his sons-in-law. |
Ge 19:12 | ¶ And the men said unto Lot, Hast24 thou here any besides? son25 in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: |
Ge 19:13 | For we will destroy this place, because the cry26 of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath27 sent us to destroy it. |
Ge 19:14 FAITH-UNBELIEF | And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which28 married his daughters, and said, Up29, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one30 that mocked unto his sons in law. |
Ge 19:15 | He is directed to flee with his family to the mountains, but obtains leave to go into Zoar. |
Ge 19:15 | ¶ And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened31 Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here32; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. |
Ge 19:16 ANGELS DELIVERANCE HASTE-DELAY MERCIFULNESS-UNMERCIFULNESS | And while he lingered33, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD34 being merciful unto him: and they brought35 him forth, and set him without the city. |
Ge 19:17 BRANDS FROM THE BURNING INVITATIONS-WARNINGS LOOKING BACKWARD LOT | And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said36, Escape37 for thy life; look38 not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. |
Ge 19:18 | 39And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: |
Ge 19:19 | Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou40 hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some41 evil take me, and I die: |
Ge 19:20 | ¶ Behold now, this42 city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my43 soul shall live. |
Ge 19:21 | And he said unto him, See, I44 have accepted thee45 concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. |
Ge 19:22 HASTE-DELAY ZOAR Zoar | Haste thee, escape thither; for46 I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called47 Zoar48. |
Ge 19:23 LOT Zoar | The sun was risen49 upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. |
Ge 19:24 | Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed. |
Ge 19:24 BRIMSTONE FIRE LOT METEOROLOGY Gomorrah Sodom | ¶ Then the LORD50 rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone51 and fire from the LORD out of heaven; |
Ge 19:25 | 52And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. |
Ge 19:26 | Lot's wife becomes a pillar of salt. |
Ge 19:26 BLINDNESS-VISION HELPS-HINDRANCES LOOKING BACKWARD OBEDIENCE-DISOBEDIENCE SALT SALT | ¶ But his wife looked53 back from behind him, and54 she became a pillar of salt. |
Ge 19:27 EARLY RISING | ¶ And Abraham gat up early55 in the morning to the56 place where he stood before the LORD: |
Ge 19:28 CONFLAGRATIONS Gomorrah Sodom | 57And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. |
Ge 19:29 | Lot dwells in a cave. |
Ge 19:29 MEMORY-OBLIVION | And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God58 remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. |
Ge 19:30 CAVES Zoar | ¶ And Lot59 went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he60 feared to dwell in Zoar61: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. |
Ge 19:31 | The incestuous origin of Moab and Ammon. And there came two angels. Or, rather, 'the two angels came,' referring to those mentioned in the preceding chapter, and there called 'men.' It seems, (from ch. 18, ver. 22,) that these two angels were sent to Sodom, while the third, who was the Lord or Jehovah, remained with Abraham. |
Ge 19:31 | And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not62 a man in the earth to come63 in unto us after the manner of all the earth: |
Ge 19:32 | Come64, let us make our father drink65 wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed66 of our father. |
Ge 19:33 | And they made their father drink67 wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. |
Ge 19:34 | 68And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. |
Ge 19:35 | 69And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. |
Ge 19:36 | 70Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. |
Ge 19:37 MOABITES | And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab71: the same is the father of the Moabites72 unto this day. |
Ge 19:38 AMMONITES | And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi73: the same is the father of the children74 of Ammon unto this day. |
