I don't think Bro Brown was being disrespectful or anything.
I don't think he was trying to cast a negative shadow on what
you said. I think he was clarifying the difference between
*earnings* and *income* and their use when in context of a
church.
I think there's as much difference between 'em in what the Internal
Revenue Service would call "gross" and "net". Gross is everything
that is gained, and net is either the profit left over after taxes
and expenses are removed -or- the amount lost due to taxes and
expenses taking more than the gross taken in. "Net" can be either
positive or negative. The IRS would say it's a "net gain" or a
"net loss".
Main Entry: earn·ings
Pronunciation: '&r-ni[ng]z
Function: noun plural
Date: 1732 19
1 : something (as wages) earned
2 : the balance of revenue after deduction of costs and expenses
... basically *earnings* is profit.
Main Entry: in·come
Pronunciation: 'in-"k&m also 'in-k&m or 'i[ng]-k&m
Function: noun
Date: 14th century 19
1 : a coming in : ENTRANCE, INFLUX
<fluctuations in the nutrient income of a body of water>
2 : a gain or recurrent benefit usually measured in money that derives
from capital or labor; also : the amount of such gain received in
a period of time <has an income of $20,000 a year>
I think that's the first difference.
The second difference comes from the definition of *earn*....
Main Entry: earn
Pronunciation: '&rn
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Middle English ernen, from Old English earnian; akin
to Old High German arnOn to reap, Czech jesen autumn
Date: before 12th century 19
1 a : to receive as return for effort and especially for work
done or services rendered
b : to bring in by way of return
<bonds earning 10% interest>
2 a : to come to be duly worthy of or entitled or suited to
<she earned a promotion>
b : to make worthy of or obtain for
<the suggestion earned him a promotion>
- earn·er noun
When applied to a church, *earnings* implies that the church is performing
a service, like a automotive garage, taxicab, restaraunt, bowling alley,
physician, dentist, etc. that people give money in order to receive the
service.
In the case of church, compensation towards the church isn't mandatory prior
to- or after church activities happen. *Willingness* and *freewill* isn't a
factor when we're talking about the term *earnings*.
Income basically is *money received*. Whether it is earned (via a service
performed) or donated (money given voluntarily), received money is income.
