Hello all Higher-Fire readers:
Re Brother harrell's question -- I agree with brother Conant.
Someone put it this way in preaching: Study yourself full and then
pray yourself empty until the Lord can take the fruit of your studies
and anoint them. Like Brother Conont said, we need to seek the will
of God for our text but we owe it to ourselves and to the saints to
whom we minister to prepare as much as possible. No, it is not a sin
to use notes to help you keep on track. Neither is it a sin to end
your sermon before the entire congregation is glassy eyed from
fatigue. It is bad enough that the world might call a preacher
Reverend; I just pray that a Pentecostal preacher is never called
Neverend. (Smiley time here!!!)
As far as reading sermons is concerned, did you know that Jonathan
Edwards, that old Puritan preacher read the sermon "Sinners in the
Hands of a Mighty God"? God used that sermon mightily in Edward's
day. I really don't think God is as much concerned about our
delivery as he is about our hearts being right with God and prepared
for the Holy Ghost to move upon during a sermon.
Good question, Brother Ray. Keep them coming
Dave
