Well, now that I think about it, this is just the color version of the
old black and white special effect created by the "montage amplifier".
This circuit was used exactly as described, only they used black
instead of blue.  The video signal was the run through a detector and
a Schmidt trigger and the output of the Schmidt trigger operated a
video MUX to switch between the actor and the scenery.  I know about
this device which was invented around 1950 by General Electric because
my father helped develop it :->
