I first attended a UPC church in January of 1978. I had been in the
computer field professionally for several years. When I read in
Rev. of the 666 mark, while still an unsaved athiest, my jaw hit the
floor! You see, I had been using the 666 system since 1969 to
communicate between an IBM 2780 BiSync remote batch terminal and a
360/75 mainframe in Research Triangle, North Carolina. Thank God that
there are now two excellent churches down there: Bro. Huntley in
Raliegh, and Bro. Godair in Durham. There are no doubt others, but
those I have personally attended :)
The 2780 uses binary synchronous serial data transmission to send
computer data over leased phone lines. The "beast" (we actually
called it that, referring to the whole computer system) moved data at
a blazing (for those days) 2000 Baud. The modem was the size of a
foot-locker, and actually had vacuum tubes in it. To get even faster
speed, the 2780 used a 6 bit code, called "transcode" (for
transmission code), to send data over the line. This gained 25% over
sending 8 bit EBCDIC.
Synchronous transmission has no start and stop bits, so it needs some
way to get in step. It keeps in step by looking at transitions from 1
to 0 or from 0 to 1, and adjusting its clock oscillator to keep that
edge inside of a 1/16 bit width window.
But how to get in step in the first place? It does the machine
equivalent of Lawrence Welk (am I showing my age?) going "and uh 1,
and uh 2, and uh 3..." at the start a song. The 2780 does the same
thing at the start of each block (kind of like a packet, but not so
sweet...) by sending SYNCHRONOUS IDLES. SYNCHRONOUS IDLES are
actually characters, just like any other characters, but at the start
of a message, they have special meaning. Not just any character will
do. Both ends of the line must agree on what character to look for.
The character must have a unique bit encoding, so that it will not
look the same if it is shifted out of position by 1,2,3,etc. bits, or
else we could not tell where one character ends and the next one
begins. It must also have a distinct 0-to-1 edge, and a distinct
1-to-0 edge, to get the bit rate clock started in time.
It turns out that the bit pattern 000110 meets the requirements.
Remember, we are using a 6 bit code. This pattern is also
particularly easy to decode with diode AND and OR gates, such as were
used in those days.
And guess what? That character in 6-bit transcode is the character
"6"! And furthermore, they send three of them at the start of every
message! There's your "666", plain as day, in the synchronous
preamble to a BiSync data block in 1969. And the SYNCHRONOUS IDLE
character is abbreviated SYN in both the ASCII and EBCDIC character
sets. SYN is pronounced "sin". The association is too strong to be a
mere coincidence, but every decision is grounded in sound engineering
principles and practices.
This early heritage has had its traditional influence on later
designs. When BiSync moved to 7 bit ASCII and 8 bit EBCDIC, the
binary 6 representation for the SYN character remained. The UPC
(Universal Product Code, *NOT* United Pentecostal Church!) bar codes
found on every item that you buy at a cash register nowdays have
inherited this convention. The first number ia always a 6. The last
number is also always a 6. There is also a 6 off-center in the middle
of the code. The reason for this is that the bar code reader needs to
get started knowing that it is looking at a real bar code, and not the
floral pattern on the cashier's scarf.
The engineers used a 6 because that's what had always been used for
similar purposes in the past (originally 6 bit transcode and BiSync
from the 2780). The scanner may see the bar code forwards or
backwards, so a 6 is at each end to get it started. UPC uses a 4 bit
code, so 6 is 0110, thus the same forwards and backwards -- a
necessary thing for this application. The 6 off-center in the middle
is so the reader can tell whether it saw the bar code forwards, or
backwards. If backwards, then it flips it around mirror image style
to make it forwards. So we have a 6 at the front, back, and middle:
six 6's, or 666. That 666 is all over you kitchen right this very
moment.
Rachel> Also, the
Rachel> fact that barcodes are being used for "buying and selling"

I live in Chicago, and a major groceryu store here is named "Jewel".
They offer an ID card that allows you to buy with a check, or cash
checks for cash. It also entitles you to special discounts to card
holders only. (I have one :(, but I may stop using it...) Jewel is
owned, I have heard, by a group of Mormons, whether or not funded by
the Mormon church itself or not, I do not know.

That may have just been flourescent ink and a UV light. That's what a
lot of bars and night-clubs used to use before I was saved.
