We pay tithes on all the increase, meaning on the gross income. We
hadn't always done that until we heard a preacher say " You drive on the
roads that you buy with your taxes ( and attend school etc.)" So he was
saying that since we benefited from these things that it was still
increase. It sounded right to us. We also pay tithe on the venison that
my husband gets. If this sounds extreme I offer this scripture: " Woe
unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and
anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law,
judgement, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done and not left the
other undone." Matt.23:23.
And so, the Lord said, Yes, it is right to pay tithe of these minor
things, but you must not forget the weightier matters. IOW, Jesus wasn't
upset that they were paying tithe of these minor things, He was
emphasizing that judgement, mercy and faith shouldn't be overlooked and
they were more important than tithing little things. "These ought ye to
have done and not left the other undone."
