I should have been clearer in tying that phrase to the situation I had
outlined.
(The Pastor's use of his influence and authority to keep me from moving.)

No one, not even me, would take issue with Paul's command to follow him.
Paul's qualifier though was to follow him as he followed Christ. This clearly
was not the case in this situation. It is also clearly not the case in any
situation
where the Pastor may use his (or her) authority in an attempt to influence
church
members to obey his personal convictions, or other commands rooted in selfish
motivation.

A church member who has the right to make choices in their life (instead of
having decisions "spoon fed" them) will have the maturity to know when
the man of God is actually following Christ.

God forbid the day come that we don't know the difference.
