Though e-mail truly isn't the *internet*... it uses the protocols, transport
mechanisms, network, and backbone to carry out e-mail delivery.

Also, the way that e-mail client software can de-code and use html markup
in it, many folks receive e-mail that's html-friendly with pictures text
and sound clickables that'll make their e-mail look as if they're viewing
a web page. When it becomes more multi-media like that, then it starts using
the part of the internet called the world-wide-web.

Still not the *internet*, but using more and more of it all of the time...

To my 71 year old Roman Catholic mother that has an e-mail address to keep
in contact with all five of her kids and other relatives... e-mail to her
is the internet. She's not much into the www as she can only browse with
Lynx and it doesn't come alive to her in text-only mode.

I think when someone uses the term "the internet" their talking the whole
communication thang that happens when you dial up your online service provider
(OSP) like AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve and receive the service that they can
bring to your PC ... or you dial-up your internet service provider (ISP)
like Netcom, Earthweb, AT&T Worldnet, Ameritech, IQuest, etc. so that the
clients on your pc can access your e-mail box, network news (usenet), wwww,
gopher, telnet, etc. Of all the internet services available e-mail is the
most widely used by all folks that use the net.

So when you look at the little narrow definition of e-mail, no *e-mail* isn't
the internet (by itself). But when you consider what it means to other folks
definition of what the *internet* is ... it (e-mail) very well could be.
