No.... not a complete day... but it counts for day #1. Look at the
parable of the man with the vineyard with the employees. No matter
the length of time they spent in the vineyard for the day... they all
received the same "days" wages. Whether it was all day long, 4 hours,
2 hours, 30 minutes, or just a few moments.... they were all paid the
same wages for "1 day's work".
Also realize that Jesus didn't physically have to be placed in the
grave for his spirit to have already left and been in the depths.
When he died, he gave up the ghost. His spirit left (his body) and
went to preach to the spirits in prison.
Crucifixion certainly started at/or around 9am (3rd hour of the day) ...
he was on there for about 6 hours before he died making it about 3pm.
It was at 3pm that his spirit left and went to "the grave".
>Besides, 4-5 hours is not one Jewish day.
Correct ... not a complete Jewish day. The repentant thief on the
cross on one side of him ... had the promise that "this day ... thou
shalt be with me in paradise". Meaning, that he'll be dying before
sunset as well. Remember, the soldiers had to break their legs to make
sure they were all dead before sunset because that was the Passover and
it wasn't lawful to put someone to death on the Passover. Jesus died
around 3pm. The others died sometime right before sunset.

Correct.... just because a whole 24 hour period isn't consumed, doesn't
mean that he he wasn't in "the grave" (spiritually -not- physically) on
that day. His last day "in the grave" was the 3rd Jewish day since his
spirit had departed his body. Remember, you only have to endure part of
the Jewish day for it to qualify....
I think the schedule was more like....
Thursday day/evening - Jesus celebrates Passover
Thursday evening/night - Jesus is arrested in the garden of Gethsemane
while the disciples couldn't stay awake
[Matt, Mark, & Luke say that the next morning (when it was day) he
was brought before the different kangaroo courts to do the dirty job
of condemning him]
Friday morning/daybreak - kangaroo court time ... taken from court to
court finally sentence was prounounced
before
Friday 3rd hour - crucifixion began
Friday 9th hour - Jesus dies (fullfilling day #1)
Friday pre-dusk - other criminals die
Friday dusk - beginning of the next Jewish day (#2)
Passover
Saturday dusk - beginning of the next Jewish day (#3)
Sunday morning - Jesus arose on the 3rd day
As I remember, Passover is defined as the "Saturday" after the vernal
equinox after the 1st full moon. That makes Easter Sunday the day
following. Jesus died the Jewish day *before* Passover (Saturday).
Luke 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in
a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before
was laid.
54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation,
that is, the day before the sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also
waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto
Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus
[the Sabbath was clearly was the very next day after crucifixion]
I understand the scriptures to say "on the third day" ... not ...
"after three days". I think there's a big difference between the
two.
Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples,
how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of
the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and
be raised again the third day.
Matthew 17:23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised
again. And they were exceeding sorry.
Matthew 27:64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the
third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him
away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so
the last error shall be worse than the first.
Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of
man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill
him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
Mark 10:34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall
spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he
shall rise again.
Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be
rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and
be slain, and be raised the third day.
Luke 18:33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the
third day he shall rise again.
Luke 24:7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of
sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Knowing this ... if the sabbath was the day immediately after the day that
the crucifixion happened, using a 24 hour day to calculate the holy week
doesn't fit. The only way that Jesus could have been like unto the sign of
Jonah, was if his spirit were to be *out* of his body for three separate
Jewish days ... as shown previously.
