The "Chemist, an Engineer, and a Physicist were stuck on a desert
island" joke reminded me of an old mathematician joke:
Several math grad students were sharing an apartment to cut expenses.
The first morning, the convened in the kitchen to prepare for the
first day of school. One of them asked, "How are we going to make
coffee?" Another student noticed a coffee pot on the table next to a
can of coffee.
Another student said, "Lets fill the coffee pot up from the sink, put
in the ground coffee, plug in the pot, wait till it perks, and pour
the coffee into cups. We can then have our coffee."
This worked great, and they all had coffee and went off to classes.
The next morning, a similar scene ensued. This time, however, the
coffee pot was in the sink, since somebody had been thoughtful enough
to wash it out. The students were perplexed. "How shall we make
coffee this morning," they wondered.
Then, in a stroke of genius, one student said, "Lets just put the
coffee pot on the table. Then we have yesterday's problem, which we
already know how to solve!"
I guess you have to know math types to appreciate this one. :-)
