The best evidence seems to point to Mt. Hermon for the following
reasons.
1. It is near Caesarea Philippi which is where Jesus and the
disciples were just 6 to 8 days prior to the transfiguration (6
according to Matthew and Mark and 8 according to Luke). I don't
believe there is any indication that He traveled during these
days.
2. Matthew describes the place as a "high mountain." Mt. Hermon
stands about 9,200 feet above sea level.
Other sites have been suggested for reasons that are not
explained. One tradition says that that the event took place at
Mt. Tabor which stands just over 1,800 feet high about 11 miles
from the Sea of Galilee. Others have suggested Mt. Carmel which
is just under 1,800 feet high and probably too far away to be a
realistic alternative.
No, I did not have this stuff memorized. I, also was interested
in finding out and I had a little time to kill before lunch. :-)
God speed,
