IMHO, mainline and evangelical denominations are little different from
groups -- such as J.W. and Mormons -- which have traditionally been
identified as cults.

Just so you know where I'm coming from...

Our church does participate in some ecumenical type activities. For
example, we as a church support the local Crisis Pregancy Center,
participate in Jesus Is the Way Prison Ministry functions, and support
a local ministry called Urban Restoration Ministries (which is run by
an Apostolic minister, but takes help from everybody). We do dialogue
with other churches on issues that are of common interest. We even let
members of the Episcopal church next door use our parking lot :-)

On a personal level, I participate in a non-denominational Bible study
at work. I buy my books at the local Christian bookstores, and listen
to the local Christian radio stations. I've participated in Christian
dramatic theater, and as I confessed earlier this week, I've even
attended the occasional denominal church service. I've taken part in
other Christian lists on the Internet, though I haven't been actively
involved in those lists in quite some time.

But I do not agree that mainline and evangelicals are categorically
different from "cults," though I will concede that there may be some
difference in degree.

Even when proseltyzing though, I agree there's a way to communicate
without being offensive or condescending.
