  Bro Harvey:
In the first place the "Do it because I said so mentality preachers do
not instill personal convictions and the people will adhere only as long
as the Pastor is present or still has power.
 Me:
I agree with you Brother. As an electrician, I find that apprentices have a
better success rate in completing their tasks when the "concept" is explained
instead of merely relaying a set of directions. However there are times when I
just relay directions because it is not expedient to explain the concepts. It
could be because their understanding of the trade is so elementary that a
brief explanation will not suffice. Sometimes they have to "just do it" or
"just don't do it."
I will not let an apprentice work on something "hot" or energized, not
because there is something inherently wrong with working on things hot, but
because they have not been in the trade long enough to know the potential
dangers. They don't know that you can be shocked from a "neutral" wire, they
don't know to make sure that you are not grounded, they have not been told to
work hot things with only one hand to avoid completing a circuit through your
body.
There are also things that we as "Journeymen" never do. Is it because it
will kill us if we do it? No, not necessarily. We could do the thing a hundred
times and never get bit, and be killed the one hundred and first time.
I hope you can make sense of my little analogy. Mike
