I'm reminded of an article by Bro. David Fuller, based on John 4:35-38,
regarding our manner of presenting the apostolic faith. In part, he writes:
"I fear that in some cases Apostolics feel that they must 'plow up' what
has already been planted and start all over in their fields....Instead of
tearing up others' beliefs and experiences with God, let us offer them what
they have not yet received. Others have toiled before us; their footmarks
are bloodstained, their tears have watered the earth, and we are now
entering into their toil.
"The revealed Biblical truth that they possessed may have been incomplete,
but let us be careful lest we destroy someone else's labors. We do not have
to start over at the beginning with them....We just need to bring the
harvest to completion. Move from the realm of confrontation to the area of
presentation! We can still have joy in a harvest, though we may not have
sown all the seed.
"Let us be careful that our tracts, articles, books and sermons do not take
on a negative tone, trying to prove others wrong. Many arguments and
debates have been won with these tactics, but very few souls have been won
using this approach."
[For anyone interested, I hope to have the full article available on the
Web before too long.]
