> I find nothing wrong with the term new convert...
But we're not talking about what people who've been in "church" for 20
years feel about the term. We're used to the lingo, there's a certain
semantic in those words for us. It's jargon.
We're talking about the newcomer; what does "New Convert Class" sound
like to the visitor who's never been to church? In the old Soviet
Union, a "reeducation camp" probably sounded peachy to the apparatchik,
but those of us in the west have a completely different view of that
phrase.
If you want to see some old-style communist propoganda, visit the
(North) Korean Central News Agency web site at

It's not nearly as bad as it used to be, but the language they use is
laughable to our western ears, and whoever is writing this obviously
thinks he is writing some wonderfully persuasive prose. Get a load of
this press release, which was issued to *western* news angencies:
The hard-fought Fatherland Liberation War against U.S.- led imperialist
allied forces was a showdown of strength as well as a showdown of
ideologies and culture. During the war, the Korean people confirmed the
true values of their ideology and culture and, at the same time, the
reactionary and immoral nature of American "values" and culture. No one
can deny that South Korean society has turned into a den of criminals
under the sway of corruption and social vices such as the Hanbo
incident because of the influence of the 50 odd years of U.S. military
occupation and American "values" and decadent culture. No matter what
false propaganda the United States may spread over "Radio Free Asia,"
the Korean people will feel stronger wrath and hatred for the U.S. And
harden their confidence in their ideology, culture and cause.
I like Lisa's "New Life Class" suggestion.
So, umm, are there any "New Converts" on this list? Does that phrase
seem like a slight pejorative to you, or is it just fine?
I think I'll ask around the office and ask them what they think of that
term. I'll post the results here.
