The Internet was a big gumment project. It was the U.S. Department
of
Defense ARPANET before it was the Internet, and it was developed in
the
60's as a military network which could survive a nuclear attack
(supposedely).
By 1980, several commercial and educational networks had linked onto
ARPANET, and by then folks were calling it the Internet. Ten years
ago, NSFNET was created with a 56Kbps backbone. In 1990, ARPANET
was
phased out. CIX (Commercial Internet Exchange) was started to
provide
commercial providers with access to the Internet.
ME:
Actually, brother masoner, what the brother/sister was refering to
was the creation, not of the internet, but of a web page. The
ARPANET began as a Local Area Network between 4 computers of the U.S.
Dept or defense. It was to share the ability to access the same
files from different computers so everyone working on the project
could use the files. When ARPANET went out and used telephone lines
to access different buildings, it's popularity grew and as more
people tapped in (after the cold war scare, of course), the goverment
gave its permission to companies to market the service, as you said.
However, this type of internet was only like a primitive email (send
files to each other). But it quickly developed after the "Poor guy"
created an effecient way to share information and later to do it on
the internet! =<> So you were both right! :-)

I affirm the biblical foundation for a relationship with God: We are
to turn away from doing wrong, be baptized in the name of Jesus in
accordance with scriptural examples, receive the marvelous gift of
the Holy Spirit, and embrace a daily walk with Him. (See Acts 2:38)
