If you can find one, the cherokee with the I6 is a decent handling SUV,
gets around 17-20mpg in town and performs well. I had one for a couple
years (wife wanted a car so we traded it off) The only complaint I ever
had was the mileage. It is a bigger vehicle and more prone to take
abuse than smaller cars (does good in fender denders).
A coworker just replaced his 1989 Civic (250k+ miles) when he lost a
fight with a deer. He had little to no trouble with it and it did well
on bad roads.
