Well, if it was my daughter(and it too soon will be), I'd look for a tank;
a Sherman would be nice.

But seriously, $5k should buy a real nice car. Can she drive a manual?

Well, I for one would _NEVER_ buy a used $5k 4wd unless I knew the owner.
Big bucks to fix. Every thing is "special".

IF you can find one of the 2wd Cherokees that could be a solution. Our
sales rep drives one all over the southeastern portion of the country -
about 500 miles a day. He just had his in the shop after 2yrs of use.

I'm sure you have, but check the insurance rates of SUVs and sports cars.
Then think small pickup, T-bird, Monte Carlo ....

About anything for $5k should be up to that; down here(East TN) $2500
would buy a real nice car or truck. And $1500 would buy a decent reliable
car.

If your heart is set on $5k(and she'll agree) find a Volvo 240 series.
Close to a tank, not hard on fuel, run forever, turn on a dime, and will
fly. Mine has well over 230k and my mom's has over 150k.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance, maintenance, and maintenance.
