| caryle> Not so if they apply themselves! What ever happens when a
| caryle> musician marries another musician? They open a music
| caryle> studio out of their home and rake in the big bucks
| caryle> (lessons run from $15-35/hour). You can work for two or
| caryle> three days a week each, 8 hours a day, and have *plenty*
| caryle> of money.

| caryle> Anneliese Senior Music major (Vocal performance) at Xavier
| caryle> University, Cincinnati, Ohio.
|
| Lets see here...
|
| 2 days at 8 hours/day for 2 people at $35/hr = $56000.00 before taxes
|
| figgure 30% taxes, federal, state, and local, leaves $39200.00
|
| Mortgage= $800*12 = 9600 leaves 29600
<snip>
Also, such
| a studio implies business liability insurance, advertising expense,
| etc. not to mention musical instruments, recording equipment, etc.
Ya got me to a point, but I failed to mention added income of accompanying
High School programs (pd. by the hour), auditions (paid by the hour, can
take an entire Saturday), solo/ensemble contests (again, hourly pay,
all-day stuff), special events (weddings, funerals, etc.--flat fees). For
two people. Let's go through the math above working three regular days
just in the studio for two people:
6 days. (2 ppl. x 3 days) x 8 hrs. @ $35/hour (52 wks/year): 87360
Taxes (we'll go with 30% tot.): 61152 left
Tithes/Offerings (-15% of gross): 48048 left
Mortgage (@$800/mo.=9600): 38448 left
Car pmts (2 cars @ $300ea.): 31248 left
Car ins. ($600x2 cars/year): 30048 left
Health ins. ($600/mo): 22848 left
Clothes ($1500/year total-realistic): 21348 left
Groceries ($100/wkx52): 16148 left
Electricity ($150/mo.): 14348 left
Gas ($50/mo): 13748 left
Water ($40/mo): 13268 left
Telephone ($60/mo--OOT rels.): 12540 left
Seems like plenty to me! Enough for:
General Savings ($150/mo): 10740 left
Repair Savings ($200/mo): 5740 left
WOM Advertising ($0.00/mo): 5740 left
One-time Sign purchase ($500): 5240 left
Studio equip: (these are *lesson* studios, not *recording* studios, big
difference)
Tape recorder (for vocalist/instrum.
accomp. tapes (one time:$150): 5090 left
* Of course, one can always charge for these.
Piano (in my case, a gift--$0.00): 5090 left
Second Piano ($4500--used): 590 left
Bus. insurance (no clue as to $$), but if necessary, can pick up an extra
day! :)
Still, this is quite a living for part-time work (less than four days a
week). And this doesn't even count extra income from the above mentioned
sources (which can keep you busy all year if you want).
Almost 90Ks a year, not bad considering the standards of living my husband
and I grew up with (he: Mom made >$800/mo. me: total income/fam. of four
$60,000/year, and they managed to save enough to send both of us kids to
private universities.)
