Pantyhose and Knee Highs

Well, for what it's worth, here's my two cents worth:
There are certain standards of holiness which the Holy
Ghost places on one's heart. There are other standards which are
spelled out clearly in the Bible. At times, there may be temporary
cultural imperatives which necessitate abstaining from
one thing or another due to unwholesome association. The rest needs to be
left to the individual saint to decide, as far as I'm concerned. Jesus
said you're not to detract from his law...but you're not to add to it either.
It is a well-known fact that the Church has been under attack from the
adversary, attempting to destroy holiness and blur the distinction between
being a saint and being in the world. That is no secret. And while we're
decrying and denouncing the dangers of compromise, we can't forget the twin
brother of compromise, which is extremism.
In the New Testament, we read of Jesus Christ resoundingly condemning the
pharisees for teaching their own traditions for the commandments of God.
He said they were making the word of God of none effect by doing so. Now
stop and think. There are certain holiness convictions which come right
from the mouth of God, which he puts on the hearts of his people almost
immediately upon conversion. Soon after we're saved, we know to lay
television aside, to put on modest clothes, to avoid worldly environments,
etc., because we love the Lord and can hear his voice. Now, if we
intermingle quirky notions and extreme positions with what God has already
established through His spirit and by His word, the importance of these
"real" holiness issues is drastically undermined.
Think about it...if wearing hose (or quibbling about what kind of hose) is
made into a holiness issue, there's not an ounce of support for that,
neither in scripture nor in Holy Ghost convictions. God simply doesn't
require women to wear hose, and if they do, he doesn't dictate what color
or style. The same could be said for open-toes shoes (notice that even the
Lord Jesus Christ wore sandals). Now, if we elevate this issue to the
level of a standard of holiness, we've just said that it's as important for
ladies to wear hose as it is for ladies not to wear pants and not to wear
make-up, or cut their hair. We've put it in the same category as not
watching television, not wearing jewelry for adornment purposes, etc.
We're not elevating the importance of hose by doing that (you don't make
God's mind up for him), you DEGRADE the importance of the REAL holiness
issues by taking man-made ideas and calling them sin issues! Judge in
yourselves...is there anything immodest about the below-the-knee section of
somebody's leg? Because if there's not, then we need to leave it alone.
If the Bible is silent about the issue, and the Holy Ghost is likewise
silent, then perhaps we should be also.
