Pantyhose and Knee Highs

I haven't seen this issue recently. I know the beginnings were a joke, but
I have a real question...

What is so bad about going without hose on a 100-degree day when your skirt
is long enough to sweep your ankles (like those long wrap-arounds that are
popular)? Why put on two layers (three if you count the slip necessary to
prevent "see-through" problems)? I know men wear long pants, but it is
still possible to keep them relatively thin, one layer (socks do not cover
your thighs!) and breathable (not like polyester blended "work" pants).
"Breathable" is definitely NOT an adjective I'd use to describe pantyhose.

I know my pastor's wife would make the case for the "modesty" issue, but if
your skirt is that long, what real difference in outward appearance would
hose make? And, when you wear hose that matches your legs, it isn't really
"covering" them at all. From even a short distance, no one can tell one
way or another. Should we "axe" everything but colors that contrast with
the skin?

Input anyone?
