I wonder sometimes what went through Jesus's mind. He had 12 non-conformance
in his presence. They had left everything to follow him, which in that day
was a BIG step. You have a few major players, though all were important. The
Bible only spends time with a few of the major figures of the time.
Here was God trying to mode 12 men and several others hanging around him
into a body of believers that would rock the world. I would imagine that he
got frustrated at times in the flesh. Peter was on the move and sometimes
going way to fast for his own good. You have John and his brother wanting to
1) cast fire from heaven and 2) sit at the right hand of God. You had others
that had their own personalities.
What would have happened if, when the Jewish Rabbi's had beating them, and
threatening them with death, if they did not quit preaching that name, that
they had just gone home? They gave up, they put their tails between their
legs and ran. What would have happened?
The point is, the church is made up of people that are not conforming to any
one thing. Some are drunks, save from the bottle, some are drug addicts,
saved from the throws of drug abuse. Some are simple people that do buy the
"party line" of this world. Others are into witchcraft and devil worship,
when the God of Heaven touch their life. All are non-conformance, for if
they had comforted to this world, they would have died in their sins.
This is what makes up the church, people. Like David and his 600 men, the
church is made up with the mal-contents of the world. People longing for a
better life, a changing way. Having a loving God, redeem them of their sins.
What more could a wondering world ask, though most buy the "party line",
that the prince of this world lays out. Like David, men that lead but
example build armies that will follow them out of a city, to unknown, when
the son rebels. David had 600 men that formed the core of his army. They
were loyal to David, not because he was a great leader, but because he
cared. He had been chased around by a mad King. He had gone through the
spear throwing contest, and never chuck a spear back. He did not have to
prove his point, for God was working on his side.
What makes the church the church, is the people that turn their lives over
to a Loving God, and submit their lives to a man that walks with God. Not
having anything to prove. A man much like David, though there are more Sauls
out there. The treat is to find the David's. The problem is that God never
tells you whether you have a Saul or David for a King. You may have a Saul,
the Mad king, eaten with rage and self-doubt, and jeasouly. Yet to other he
may be a David, kind , understanding, even loving.
When the Jewish leaders told them not to preach the wonderful name of Jesus,
they went right home and the prayed. They prayed until the renewing came
again. Then the very next day, they were out there preaching the gospel. We
are a group of people that did not conform to this world. It would be easy
to conform and have the world back off. Yet we dont, why, for the reward,
for the treasure that is in heaven.
I ask each one of you, to examine yourself, what makes you follow the man
that you follow, out of fear, I pray not. Out of respect, I hope so. For the
Pastor need men and women that will get on their knees and pray.
THEY NEED MIGHTY MEN AND WOMEN TO FORM THE CORE OF THEIR ARMY, THAT IS WILL
MEET THEN IN THE DARKEST HOURS AND LEAVE THE CITY TO DEFEND THE KING.
Yet Pastors, that group will come from the disgruntled, the out down of the
world, the ones that dont fit in. A good study for pastors is the mighty men
of David, not what they became, but where they came from.
