Two scriptures are never mutually exclusive.
(Matthew 16:15-19 KJV)
"He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
{16} And Simon Peter answered and said,
Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
{snip}
And I say also unto thee, ...
upon this rock I will build my church;
------------------
What exactly is Jesus saying here? Is He possibly saying that He will
build the Church upon Himself or is He implying that He will build the
Church upon the revelation of who He is?
As I said before, two (or more) scriptures are never mutually exclusive.
They must all agree.
(1 Corinthians 10:4 KJV) "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for
they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was
Christ."
They drank of the spiritual Rock.
(John 4:10 KJV) "Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the
gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou
wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water."
What was the spiritual drink? The living water?
(John 7:38 KJV) "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out
of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
Don't we believe that the living water is the Holy Spirit in Us? Then isn't
the spiritual drink, the spiritual Rock, also the Holy Spirit?
(John 7:39 KJV) "(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe
on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that
Jesus was not yet glorified.)"
(Matthew 7:24 KJV) "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and
doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a
rock:"
(Luke 6:48 KJV) "He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep,
and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream
beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded
upon a rock."
"These sayings of mine." a foundation, a rock?
(Ephesians 2:20 KJV) "And are built upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;"
(Romans 9:31-33 KJV) "But Israel, which followed after the law of
righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. {32}
Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works
of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; {33} As it is
written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and
whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed."
(1 Peter 2:5-9 KJV) "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual
house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to
God by Jesus Christ. {6} Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture,
Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that
believeth on him shall not be confounded. {7} Unto you therefore which
believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which
the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, {8} And a
stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at
the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. {9} But ye
are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar
people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you
out of darkness into his marvellous light:"
Why did they stumble at the stone? Was it because they did not believe who
Jesus was?
(John 8:24-25 KJV) "I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your
sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. {25}
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the
same that I said unto you from the beginning."
(John 10:24-26 KJV) "Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto
him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us
plainly. {25} Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the
works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. {26} But ye
believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you."
What didn't they believe? They didn't believe who Jesus was. They
stumbled at the idea that Jesus was God in flesh.
(Luke 22:67-71 KJV) "Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them,
If I tell you, ye will not believe: {68} And if I also ask you, ye will not
answer me, nor let me go. {69} Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the
right hand of the power of God. {70} Then said they all, Art thou then the
Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. {71} And they said,
What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own
mouth."
What did they hear? They heard the doctrine (the teaching, the revelation)
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. And they didn't believe it, and
they stumbled on that Rock.
-------------
(John 8:32 KJV) "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you
free."
Truth = doctrine = revelation = makes you free.
(John 7:16-17 KJV) "Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not
mine, but his that sent me. {17} If any man will do his will, he shall know
of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself."
--------------
Jesus is the Christ, Christ is the Rock, Jesus is the Word, the Word is
Truth, the words are the doctrine, Jesus is the Truth -- ergo, these are
all synonymous. There is really no need to split hairs, the doctrine that
Jesus is the Christ is the rock that the Apostles, the Prophets and Jesus
Christ Himself preached. They preached that Jesus is the Christ.
(Acts 5:42 KJV) "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased
not to teach and preach Jesus Christ."
(Acts 8:35 KJV) "Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same
scripture, and preached unto him Jesus."
(Acts 17:3 KJV) "Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have
suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach
unto you, is Christ."
(John 20:31 KJV) "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus
is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life
through his name."
(1 John 5:1 KJV) "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of
God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is
begotten of him."
So then, how important is it to recognizee and believe that Jesus is the
Christ?
