In a message dated 98-02-12 12:27:21 EST, you write:

<< From:	tnally@iquest.net (Tyler Nally)
 <snip>
Someone else:
 >I've seen individuals berated for something as petty
 >as a misspelled word! That's absurd.

You:
<Hmmmmmmmmmmm .... berated? I don't think anybody was ever called *stupid*
because they can't spell -or- that they are *ignorant* -or- *unlearned*,
etc. The error of their way will be pointed out, but they won't be cast
 down for the error.>

Me:

I think a quick check of the archives will show that there was a time when the
"punctuation police" the "grammar gendarmes" and "spelling security" (not the
list moderators) would barely let a post with an insignificant error go by
without subjecting it to the highest degree of scrutiny in proof-reading.

You:
< There are
some highly talented preachers out there that could probably preach an
annointed message about "sins of wearing knee-high hose" -vs- *the holiness
of wearing pantyhose*. The preacher could probably do such a good job at
it, that by the time he's done, he could have a whole congregation fooled
into thinking that his message was "thus saith the Lord".>

Me:

"Highly talented"? "Preachers"? More likely:

Rom 16:18
18	For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own
belly; and by *good words* and *fair speeches* deceive the hearts of the
simple.
(KJV)

This would neither be "anointed" nor a "message" (biblically speaking):

Luke 4:18
18	The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath *anointed* me to *preach
the gospel* [God's message] to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the
brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight
to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
(KJV)

I've never seen a "whole congregation" that could be "fooled" by such
nonsense.

Eph 4:14
14	That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried
about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning
craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
(KJV)

You:
< Thinking that he was preaching about "not having a temper"
or "not being angry", etc. <snip> He later
looked it up in the dictionary and figured out that what his annointed
 message
was completely out of focus in accords to dictionary definition of the word.>

Me:

TEMPERANCE

The meaning of the word temperate in *English* translations of the Bible
should *not be restricted* to the kind of self-control a person exerts by
*abstaining from alcoholic beverages*.
The temperance of which the *Bible* speaks is *far more inclusive*. It
indicates a *self-control* that masters *all kinds* of sensual desires.
Through temperance the Christian disciplines body and spirit, so that he is
more capable of striving for his spiritual reward <1 Cor. 9:24-27>.
(from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary)
(Copyright (C) 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

1 Cor 9:25
25	And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in *all things*.
(KJV)

Since temperance (biblically speaking) refers to self-control in "all things",
your Pastor probably was more correct than he is giving himself credit for.
Losing (control of ) one's temper, resulting in some type of ungodly behavior
(e.g. swearing, yelling, fits of rage, physical violence, etc.), is definitely
included in the biblical teaching on temperance (self-control). Although I did
not hear his message, I believe that he probably did teach correctly on one of
the aspects of temperance, (i.e. controlling our temper).

The only way I know to walk in the following scriptures, is through self-
control (temperance):

Eph 4:26
26	Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
(KJV)

James 1:19-20
19	Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to
speak, slow to wrath:
20	For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
(KJV)

Perhaps the "dictionary definition" was "out of focus" with the "anointed
message".

my $0.02 anyway
