In reference to what/who is the Rock...

It is my interpretation that the Rock is the revelation of who
Jesus is. Peter's proclamation is of that nature. It is a
revelation that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of
the Living God. As a Jew, Peter understood that there was
only One God who would not give His glory to another.
Therefore, Peter's statement that Jesus was the Son of God
was identifying Jesus with the Almighty God, Jehovah, Yahweh,
(or however you choose to designate the God as revealed to
the Hebrews). This is the Rock - Jesus' identity. The rock
was Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One -- the one who is
Emmanuel, God with us.
As far as the keys are concerned, note a couple of things:
(1) the word is plural -- keys, not key
(2) the keys are OF the kingdom not TO the kingdom
Peter didn't open the door to heaven, Jesus did.
(John 10:7-9 KJV) "Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, I am the door of the sheep. {8} All that ever came before me are
thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. {9} I am the door: by
me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and
find pasture."
(Revelation 3:8 KJV) "I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an
open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and
hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name."
The door is open, it needs no key.
So what are the keys *of* the kingdom? Good question.
Any thoughts?
