Linux is getting some really good review lately as far as the press
is concerned about it. Lately with Red Hat 5.0, it's been said that
with the tools that comes with it for installation, it only takes about
45min - 1 hour for someone that's used to doing a WindowsNT type installation.
Linux was used in the creation of the digital special effects of the
current cinematic event "Titanic". Digital Domain created a network of
160+ DEC Alpha boxes with about 100 of them being Linux machines to
perform all of the calculations for the rendering of the waves and other
special effects associated with it.
http://www.ssc.com/lj/issue46/2494.html has the complete story with this
in part of it ....
>>>At this point the decision was made to purchase 160 433MHz DEC Alpha
systems from Carrera Computers of Newport Beach, California. Of those
160 machines, 105 of the machines are running Linux, the other 55 are
running NT. The machines are connected with 100Mbps Ethernet to each
other and to the rest of our facility.<<<
And Microsoft's reaction to a *free* OS being used on the blockbuster
movie Titanic and what it means to the computing industry in general,
