In short, preterism is the interpretation that a prophecy is already
fulfilled, once and for all.

The preterism view of our Lord's coming is that this coming occurred in
the year 70 AD, when Jerusalem was destroyed by Roman forces as a
fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy in Mt24/Lu21/Mk13. The word "preterism"
was first applied to this interpretation of the Book of Revelation;
that is the understanding that Babylon the Great was indeed Jerusalem,
"where their Lord was crucified." (Rev 11:8)

Many christians find these ideas very strange at first. Actually, it
solves a lot of exegetical questions.

If there is a key "prooftext" for this interpretation, it must be this:

  Mt 16:28 "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will
  not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his
  kingdom." [RSV]

Hope this answers your question.

Cheers,
- Jan
