Personally I believe this is classifying people into two categories, of either
"saved" or "not yet saved". I consider myself an example. I know Christ
personally and He died for me. I believe in Jesus name and am saved, but
4 years ago, this was not the case. I didn't know Jesus and thus I wasn't
saved. Jesus had still died for me and was my savior at the time, but I didn't
know or realize it and thus couldn't believe and be saved through faith.
Jesus didn't die for me when I came to know Him. He had already died, the
deed was done it was just a matter of my accepting it. The unfortunate
problem is that too many people die while they are still "not yet saved", so
while Christ did die for them too and is their savior, they never accepted it
and therefore couldn't receive the gift.
Just my view. ;-)
