I am having trouble logging in with one of my modems.

Please excuse me if this is a question that comes up a million times a
day. I looked over the mailing list archives, and I did a search on
Deja News and found two people with similiar problems, but I could not
find any followups to either posts.

And I would really like to get this to work...

My dial in server and both of the clients I have tested are RedHat 5.2
boxes with are using the mgetty-sendfax RPM. Currently the server only
allows someone to log in using /bin/login (with the hopes some day of
getting AutoPPP to work as well). The modem on the server is an
external USR Sportster 33.6.

Everything works fine, on both clients, when I use the external
Practical Peripherals 14.4 modem that I have laying around. I can dial
in (using minicom), connect, log on, and work without any problems.
However, whenever I try to use one of the several USR 56K internal
modems that I have access to I am able to dial in, connect, but when I
start typing in the username I am able to type in 4 characters and then
mgetty has a problem. I thought at first it was a IRQ conflict with the
modem, but I removed all of the other cards in the machine and I still
had the same problem. I also played with setserial and the jumpers on
the card so that the modem WOULD have an IRQ conflict, and the modem
still worked (after a fashion) it just seemed MUCH more sluggish.

Here is a sample mgetty.log.ttyS0 where I was attempting to log on as
"tester":

Any help would be appreciated. If what I have asked is a common problem
or even (God help me) a FAQ please point me to the proper FM to read
and I promise that I will be properly embarrassed.
