Yes, this is a well-known problem. But there are some exceptions to this.
* ELSA is veryveryvery good concerning Linux - the XFree86 developers
get graphics cards and full specs *before* the card hits the market!
(And I get modems, and someone who listens when I complain)
* USR isn't that bad. They actually did look at my log files, operating
system independent, and accepted that there were bugs in their modem.
(They didn't *DO* anything about it lately, and this is what I really
hate - but it will hit and hurt the DOS market as well. USR has just
become lame recently... :-( ).
* ZyXEL was very good - they even have a "Unix" chapter in their
modem manuals. Unfortunately, they also turned lame some years ago.
* BusLogic is very good, supporting (paying?) the Linux SCSI driver
development for their host adaptors
* ICP/GDT actually develop their SCSI drivers for Linux themselves.
* Comtrol and Specialix work with Linux developers or even pay them
to create drivers for their multi-serial boards
* ...
- so I'd conclude "actually, it's not *that* bad. Just the modem market
sucks. Sucks Big Rocks Through Small Pipes."
