how to send the SIGUSR1 signal to the mgetty process?

In FAQ.gz you write: Send the SIGUSR1 signal to the mgetty process.
How to do that?

And how can i use the vm program to talk with someone using headset
connected to my soundcard. When I use "vm dial" it's OK for 10 seconds
or something, and then vm exits and I don't hear anything.
