Sometimes data connection works, and sometimes it doesn't

If you know that it's a data connection, use "mgetty -D".  Otherwise, there
is no way (known to me) to influence the modem's ability to properly
distinguish fax<->data.  Some can do it well, some can't do it at all, 
some are in between.

You're writing now that it's a "Courier", and before you wrote only "USR
56k" - you're sure it's a Courier?  If yes, please try upgrading to the
very latest firmware, and if it still doesn't work, send me the output of
"ATI7".  I will then try to complain to USR...
