sendfax does not work

Well, maybe you should tell sendfax which tty devices you want to use?
tty4c:tty4d is the list for MY machine, not for anybody else's.

Nah. Don't EVER do things like this unless people explicitely tell you so
- you might toast your hard disk doing so, or crash your machine. Major
number "4" is the pseudo tty driver, so there wasn't much danger here, but
in case you had used "1" or so, bad things would have happened.

Sure - the modem IS NOT AT tty4c!!!!!

Put the real tty here! "fax-devices ttyS0" (or ttyS1, or whatever).
Three rules for free software:
- read the documentation
- read the error message
- THINK ABOUT IT, and fix it in the proper place
