Well I have finally found my own way of dealing with stereo wav files:
I use mxv (grapical sound editor / display program and - as it seems - the
only sound program that is willing to do what I want it to do) to throw
away one channel and then I run the other channel through
wavtopvf file.wav | pvfspeed -s 9600 | pvftormd ZyXEL_1496 3 > file.rmd
using this on stereo input produces somehow distorted rmd that sounds like
a record played with the wrong speed
