Sometimes data connection works, and sometimes it doesn't

I don't think the problem is with the 3COM side, because I also tried a USR
28.8 and I got the same results. I suspected that the modem is not getting
the right data connection signal, and confusing the connection with a fax,
however I think the problem is coming from some place else. I am starting
to think that this friend of mine has left a fax machine connected to the
same line, or the remote modem is not initializing correctly. I think the
problem is on the remote end. Just this morning, I dialed the number
again, and when I noticed the modem was having trouble, I powered off the
modem, and picked up the handset, and I heard standard the fax training
signals, which means that either the modem had started responding as a fax
or something else is connected on that line. I have to investigate
further. Thanks for pointing out the problem.
